Hawaii Trip Itinerary and ideas
5 day Hawaii trip
Dates to be confirmed and discussed.
The plan is to go to Hawaii and ride for a few days before the families join us.
Staying a Hilo Hawaiian Hotel for 5 nights. Fly to Honolulu and then into Hilo. Bikes cost an additional US$35 on Hawaiian Airlines.
Also there’s an option for flying to Maui and riding Haleakala.
The rides for the next 5 days are as follows:
1000 km in 5 days with over 18,000 metres climbing.
Day 1: The big one. Hilo to Mauna Kea. I’d suggest either a supported ride with Mid-Pacific Wheels, or a bike setup of MTB, or similar gearing 24/40. The ride is 140km with 4200 metres elevation. https://www.strava.com/routes/10986677
Day 2: Hilo to Mauna Loa. Paved all the way. 140km with 3200 metres elevation. https://www.strava.com/routes/10986710
Day 3: Hilo to Waimea. A circuit starting at Hilo and riding along the coast towards Waimea, then returning along the saddle road. 200km 3400 metres climbing. https://www.strava.com/routes/10987240
Day 4: Hilo to Volcano. A true sightseeing tour of volcano national park. 188km and 2950 metres climbing. https://www.strava.com/routes/10987265
Day 5: Hilo to Kona and back. A long day in the saddle, on Saddle Rd. 250 km and 4600 metres climbing, albeit it very steady. https://www.strava.com/routes/10987297
Equipment:
Definitely a Camelbak 3 litre pack. Plenty of gels. Either a gravel bike with 40+ tyres on, or hire a Mountain Bike for the Hilo Mauna Kea ride. The rest of the rides can be done on a road bike. A large saddle bag, or handlebar bag is advisable for jackets and gloves etc.
